6 things things to know before taking an online course

Studying online is becoming popular these days. Although many people stereotype the image of online learning, this mode of learning has a heap of advantages of over the traditional classroom way of learning. I spent my first two years of college, studying online with UNICAF and I discovered that online learning has an upper hand over traditional classroom mode of learning in the following ways.

Firstly online learning betters the traditional mode because of its flexibility. With the advancements in technology one can learn anywhere, any time. The instructor provides all the necessary material and communicates with you online. This means you choose the time and place to learn on your own. This makes online learning a more convenient mode for busy people such as the working class and single parents.in addition this flexibility will save gas for your car, getting up early for class not forgetting the uncomfortable desk at school.

Secondly online degrees will ginger up your resume. With the flexibility I have just talked about, one can complete two or more (depending on one’s capabilities) courses at a time. When employers see this, they will be impressed with your commitment to learn. A degree is a degree and employers view it that way. Most importantly you can earn a degree from the prestigious universities around the world which is unattainable with a traditional way. If you don’t have an online course now, I encourage you to take one  to expand your knowledge and chances of being employed.

tips for online learning

1. stay motivated
We have already looked at motivation as the key to success. Don’t view online learning with a negative attitude. The fact that you don’t have a professor sitting or standing in front of you doesn’t mean you aren’t learning. Work hard to achieve your dream you can even imagine there is a professor in front if that works for you.

2. Fulfill the technological requirements before the course starts
Since learning is on a digital platform make sure you have the required technology for your studying. You must check if you have the right equipment for the course. For most courses any simple computer can work however some technical courses may require advanced computer specs e.g. a bigger operating system and a larger disk space just to mention a few.  It will be painful to start thinking about buying a new computer when the course is in progress.

You should also make sure you have a reliable internet connection. Unlike the traditional way where you have a library on campus, in online learning you find every piece of information online. Poor internet connection makes research shallow and slow (which will waste your valuable time) .in addition it affects communication between you and your instructor.

3. Participate in the virtual learning environment
Just like in the traditional system of learning, online learning requires participation.  You will be required to ask and respond to questions in the virtual learning environment. This makes learning easier and enjoyable. In addition participating in an online group discussion eliminates the feeling of loneliness. You should also check the school website regularly so that you don’t miss any important information.

4. Netiquette
There is a slight difference between the traditional style of learning and online learning. When talking to each other, in the traditional style your friends may read your facial expression or tone of your voice. This not the case with online learning. Most of the times you just punch letters into a key board for communication. This calls for a cut in your sarcasm. You will think you are joking but the person on the other side might take it the other way.  You must proofread your messages before posting.

You have to contact the instructor immediately if somebody is being rude to you. Doing this will save you from getting into an online fight. Don’t respond to any message that is intentionally meant to hurt you. Always keep it mind that this is another form of a society in today’s world. Don’t say something online if you can’t say it in someone’s face.

Remember to use correct language. Informal language is not accepted and you can be punished for it. In addition you shouldn’t post anything in ALL CAPS. This is the same as shouting which is another form of rudeness.

 4. Back up data
Keeping your notes, assignments or any other valuable information in a single copy puts you at risk of losing this valuable information. You should copy your data into an external disk or upload it online so that you can still access it in case your PC crashes.

5. Begin small.
Due to its flexibility, most online courses will let you choose the number of courses you want to take. If it is your first time take one course at a time. Taking too much of any new thing results into trouble. You can start thinking of the additions depending on how you score in your first courses.

6. Use downtime wisely
This has to do with procrastination management. Unlike in the traditional system of learning, where you attend class, see your friends studying etc. in online learning there is no such a thing. When you submit an assignment there is no sign of school. Most students get tempted to spend much of their time on television, playing games etc. but “good hustlers hustle while waiting” This is the right time for you to start preparing for the next assignment. Since most assignments are written, starting early will give you the advantage of bringing something more polished up.
