7 tips for writing a winning scholarship application

winning scholarships can be very difficult if you don't how to play cards right. 95% of  students who
fail to win scholarships perceive the scholarship application process like lotto. on the flip-side scholarship winners know that it requires time and effort to come up with an effective scholarship application. one big tool that scholarship judges use  to determine the right candidates for their limited resources is the cover letter. in a situation where the cover letter is optional, take it because it can increase your chance of winning the scholarship.below are the cover letter dos and dont's.

1. it should be tailored

a good cover letter explains why you are the most suitable candidate for the scholarship. in order to achieve this you must know the objectives of the scholarship program. clearly explain your academic/professional strengths and your future plans must be in line with the objectives of the program.

2.frame a problem/need  and how you will solve it.
what we mean here is that you should state a problem which you think you will address if they award you the scholarship not your poverty.this is where most students miss it because they write about how much they need the money instead of writing about the gap they are going fill in their society if they win the scholarship. judges choose members who will benefit from the scholarship and contribute to their vision.
N.B. don't waste time telling sob stories

3.check the tone and grammar
you must use a formal tone and correct grammar. make sure you have you cover letter proofread before submission.

4. avoid vague phrases/ generalizations
be clear and specific when saying things avoid phrases like: contribute to society, improve lives, make the world a better place, opportunity to learn, i am a hard worker, etc. talk about the real life issues instead .

  5. Don't let your dad/mom write it for you
we are not saying your parents don't want you to win the scholarship, in fact they will be happier than you if you win the scholarship. judges are also human beings and they easily get annoyed when they discover some cheating.after all you are an adult do it yourself.

6. don't write a one size fits all essay
this is another common problem when it comes to scholarship applications. writing one letter to match scholarships from different organisations is impractical. you should strive to produce a unique application since every organisation has its objectives different from another.

7.start the application process early
this  will enable you to come up with a more polished cover letter. in addition starting early enables referees to help you better and happily. start early to avoid half descent submissions.
